The Lady, or the Tiger? And Other Stories by Frank R. Stockton, published in 1893, is a captivating collection of short stories that showcases the author's ingenuity and storytelling prowess. At the heart of this collection lies the eponymous tale, "The Lady, or the Tiger?" which has become an enduring allegory for unsolvable dilemmas.

Set in a kingdom ruled by a semi-barbaric king, the story presents a unique system of justice where the accused must choose between two doors, one concealing a lady and the other a hungry tiger. The outcome of this choice determines innocence or guilt. The central narrative revolves around a love affair between the princess and a commoner, culminating in a life-or-death trial by ordeal. The tale concludes with a tantalizing question that has intrigued readers for generations: which door did the accused open?

Frank R. Stockton, a celebrated American writer and humourist, crafted stories that deftly blended elements of wit, imagination, and social commentary. His ability to blend the fantastical with the thought-provoking is evident in this collection.

Beyond "The Lady, or the Tiger?" this anthology features a range of Stockton's other works, offering readers a delightful exploration of his literary talents. In "The Lady, or the Tiger? And Other Stories," Stockton's timeless tales continue to captivate and challenge readers with their imaginative narratives and exploration of the enigmatic human psyche.

Condition Report

The pages are clean, the text block is tight and the boards are in very good condition. There's a slight stain on the pastedown and it bleeds through to, and stops, at the ffep (see images). There's a pencil mark on the ffep and some very minor wear to the boards, otherwise this is a very well preserved copy.
