Description

Joinville's History of Saint Louis is a significant historical account penned by Jean de Joinville, a French historian with a remarkable life story of his own. Written at the request of Queen Jeanne of Navarre, this work originally bore the title "Histoire de Saint Louis" and was completed in 1309. Jean de Joinville was well-placed to chronicle the life of Saint Louis (Louis IX), as he not only lived during the reign of this revered French monarch but also had a personal attachment to him for over two decades.

Joinville's account is regarded as a precious historical monument, characterized by candor, good faith, and scrupulous attention to detail. The author's dedication to transmitting only what he was well-informed about is evident throughout the narrative. It not only provides insights into the events of Saint Louis's reign but also offers an intimate portrait of the man, the saint, and the king.

Over the years, "Joinville's History of Saint Louis" has been translated into English, bringing the life and times of this iconic French ruler to a wider audience. This work remains a valuable source for understanding the historical context and the remarkable personality of Saint Louis, as well as the experiences and perspectives of the author, Jean de Joinville, who participated in significant events of his era, including the Seventh Crusade to Egypt.
