Description
An elegant Short & Mason barograph, serial number C2663, manufactured in London and housed in a polished mahogany case with bevelled glass panels. This classic seven-day barograph features a stacked aneroid mechanism and finely engineered linkage, all mounted on a lacquered brass base. A mechanical chart drum sits at the rear, operated by an integrated winding mechanism at the top of the clockwork movement.
The instrument comes with a charming provenance: a fitted brass plaque engraved "A.D.C. / The Indefatigable / 1951–71", likely referencing a naval or institutional gift. The lower drawer contains spare charts and a dip pen nib bottle.
Condition report
In very good overall condition. The clockwork mechanism winds smoothly and the instrument appears to be in working order. There is wear to the recording arm's nib (stylus), which may benefit from replacement—a minor expense. The ink bottle is present, though the internal rim (retaining collar) has slipped inside and simply requires retrieval. The glass, case, and brasswork are in excellent cosmetic condition with minimal signs of age.
