Description

The fifth edition of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species was published in 1869. As with the earlier printings, it appeared in a very small run of only 2,000 copies, making it comparatively uncommon today.

This edition is particular noteworthy because it's the first edition in which the phrase “survival of the fittest,” borrowed from philosopher Herbert Spencer, was incorporated by Darwin into his argument for natural selection. It also includes the well-known fold-out diagram of evolutionary divergence, one of the most recognisable illustrations of nineteenth-century science.

It is unusual to encounter a copy of the fifth edition in such good condition. Published during Darwin’s lifetime, it marks a significant stage in the continuing development of his work.
