Description

Late 19th-century Kelvin vertical electrostatic voltmeter in original mahogany wooden carry case with brass fittings and top handle. The instrument is mounted in a protective glass-fronted frame, allowing the mechanism and Kelvin scale to be viewed while enclosed.

Attributed to Rotherham Power Station by a label affixed to the inside of the case. A printed instruction/specification sheet is mounted to the inside of the door, offering insight into the instrument’s original operation. Designed for high-voltage industrial measurement, it reflects the engineering precision of Kelvin’s work and the sophistication of early power station instrumentation.

A fine display piece for collectors of antique scientific or electrical apparatus, combining technological significance with attractive cabinet-making.

Condition report

Voltmeter mechanism and inner glazing are in good order with no visible damage. Interior is clean and well-preserved. Outer wooden case shows light surface scratches and handling marks typical of age but retains a warm patina. Brass fittings and handle are intact with natural mellowing to finish. Untested due to the specialist nature of the product, and offered as a collector’s item.
