Description
A fine example of a Henry Hughes & Son sextant, housed in its original fitted wooden case lined with green velvet. The calibration certificate, dated 1943, remains affixed to the inside of the lid.
The instrument retains its original lens, with optics that are bright and clear. The metal frame is in very good condition, showing minimal wear for its age.
This appears to be a rare variant, as it lacks the usual “HUSUN” branding often seen on Hughes frames. It is also unclear whether this model was originally fitted with a lamp; there are small pinholes present on the frame, but no signs of wiring or of the metal cable clips typically found on lamp-equipped examples having been removed.
A well-preserved and uncommon wartime sextant, suitable for both practical navigation enthusiasts and collectors of maritime instruments.
Condition report
The metal frame is in very good condition with only minor signs of age and wear. Both the index and horizon mirrors are in good working order, reflecting light well, and the arm moves smoothly with excellent precision. The original wooden case is intact and lined with green velvet, showing minor wear but remaining structurally sound, though there is a crack spanning the width of the lid (see images). The original calibration certificate is present and clearly legible.
