The Cardinal's Snuff-Box by Henry Harland, published in 1903, invites readers into a delightful turn-of-the-century Italian romance. The novel revolves around Peter Marchdale, an English novelist seeking solitude in an Italian villa for his writing. However, his plans are thwarted when he discovers his landlady is the charming and wealthy Duchessa di Santangiolo, igniting a secret affection he's held for years.
Set against the backdrop of Lombardy, the tale intertwines wit and charm as Peter navigates the obstacles posed by societal differences and the Duchessa's devout Catholicism. Henry Harland's prose captures the ambiance of Italy's beauty while illuminating the complexities of love and class divide. With the guidance of the Duchessa's matchmaking uncle, a pinch of snuff and a touch of humor, the story unfolds into a delightful exploration of romance, connection, and the delightful unpredictability of the human heart.
A few of the plates have come loose but the text block is fairly tight. The spine is slightly faded and there's age related wear to the covers. Some of the spine mesh is visible from the pastedowns on the front and back covers, however both covers are still in place. Overall, this copy is in acceptable condition.
