Description

This 1963 edition of Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth, published by Oxford University Press, unveils the inner world of a woman often overshadowed by her famous brother, William Wordsworth, and their friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Dorothy Wordsworth, affectionately dubbed Wordsworth's "exquisite sister" by Coleridge, was not merely an observer but a writer of profound poetic insight in her own right.

Within these pages, readers are transported to Alfoxden in 1798, where Dorothy and her brother, alongside Coleridge, crafted the groundbreaking "Lyrical Ballads." The journals offer an intimate glimpse into their creative process and the natural beauty that inspired them. From 1800 to 1803, when the Wordsworths resided at Dove Cottage in Grasmere, Dorothy's words continue to capture the essence of their daily lives, their interactions, and their enduring love for the Lake District.

This edition presents Dorothy's journals in their unadulterated form, exactly as she penned them. It also includes two of her own poems and thirty-three by her brother William, referred to in the journals. For those seeking a profound connection with the literary and natural world of the Wordsworths, these journals are an invaluable treasure, providing an unfiltered and enchanting perspective on their lives and creative endeavors.
