Description

Published by Heinemann in 1932, Father and Son: A Study of Two Temperaments is a deeply introspective and emotionally charged autobiographical work by the celebrated British author and poet Edmund Gosse. This classic memoir takes readers on a poignant journey into the intricate dynamics of the father-son relationship.

Edmund Gosse narrates the story of his upbringing in a strict and devoutly religious household dominated by his father, Philip Henry Gosse, a renowned naturalist and preacher. The memoir unfolds as an exploration of the profound contrast between father and son, both in temperament and belief.

The elder Gosse, deeply rooted in his religious convictions, represents a rigid and uncompromising Victorian worldview, while the younger Gosse is marked by his intellectual curiosity and growing skepticism. Their conflicting perspectives create a poignant narrative tension, which ultimately leads to a heartrending emotional conflict.

"Father and Son" is a gripping portrayal of a generation gap intensified by the clash of science and religion. Edmund Gosse's prose is poignant and reflective, inviting readers to witness the internal struggles and dilemmas that shaped his formative years.

This memoir remains a poignant and timeless exploration of the complexity of familial relationships and the clash between tradition and individuality. It serves as a compelling literary testament to the enduring power of self-discovery and the reconciliation of conflicting worldviews within the bonds of love and family.

There's a few marks and stains to the covers as well as some age related wear to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine (see images). There's some small pencil markings on the pastedowns and ffep, however the text block is tight and the pages are clean.
