Description

This is a third edition, gilt-edged copy published by Macmillan in 1878.

Old Christmas by Washington Irving, as presented in the 1878 edition by Macmillan, offers readers a delightful journey into the heartwarming traditions of 19th-century England. Originally part of Irving's "Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent" in 1819, this edition is beautifully illustrated by Randolph Caldecott, enhancing the charm of the narrative.

Irving's nostalgic recollections transport readers to a bygone era, where the spirit of Christmas is celebrated with great fervor. Through his vivid descriptions and evocative prose, Irving captures the essence of yuletide festivities, from the warmth of the hearth to the joy of gathering with loved ones.

The book, while showcasing Irving's literary prowess, also serves as a visual treat thanks to Caldecott's illustrations. Together, they create a vivid tapestry of the holiday season, replete with traditions, customs, and the true meaning of Christmas.

Despite some age-related wear on the boards and foxing throughout, this ex-libris edition, with its gilt-edged pages, carries the charm of a cherished book from the late 19th century. With inscriptions dating back to 1881 and 1893, it provides a glimpse into its own history, adding to its allure for collectors and enthusiasts of classic literature.

"Old Christmas" is a timeless reminder of the enduring magic of the holiday season and a treasured addition to any bookshelf.
